Session 2: This IV therapy infusion administration training program is part 2 of our full course.  The program combines online instruction with in-person hands on lab sessions.  The lab practicum sections of the course can be scheduled on-site for groups, alternately healthcare facility clinical educators can utilize our competency validation forms to document and run a hands-on lab practicum.

This is part 2 of the 2 part program.  Both sessions must be completed to meet program requirements.  The full program  (session 1 and 2) can be used as as full IV therapy education program for LPNs,  or as a refresher program for registered nurses.  Requirements for successful completion include a score of 80% or more on the end of session post test (1 per session), and demonstration of competency in IV administratio and care  procedures during the hands-on lab practicum (1 per session).

A list of topics covered in the full program include: short peripheral IV catheter use vs. central line use for IV therapy, venous A&P, pH and osmolarity and effects on vasculature, common infusates, short peripheral IV and central line catheter flushing, site care, cap care, sterile fluid pathway, adverse effects related to IV therapy, signs of complications, identification of veins suitable for short peripheral IV catheter insertion, short peripheral IV catheter insertion procedure, complications of IV therapy, legal implications related to IV therapy, starting and discontinuing and infusion, monitoring of the patient during an infusion, removal of the short peripheral IV catheter.
